Renew your IRP online from anywhere in Ireland, up to 12 weeks before it expires. Most people pay €300 and the new card comes by post.
You renew your IRP (Irish Residence Permit) online through the ISD renewals portal, run by Immigration Service Delivery at the Department of Justice. Apply in the 12 weeks before your card expires; most people pay €300.
Who this is for
This is for non-EEA nationals living in Ireland whose IRP card is due to expire. You must be in Ireland to apply. Each family member applies separately, and children under 16 do not need to register.
What changed: since 4 November 2024, renewals from every county are online, so you no longer go to a Garda station or office. Since 13 January 2025, first-time registration for all counties is at Burgh Quay, Dublin 2. Renewals stay online.
What you need
- A scan or clear photo of your current passport's photo page
- The front and back of your current IRP card
- Proof of address
- Documents for your stamp, such as a valid employment permit, college enrolment and fee receipts, or proof you live with your spouse or partner
- Private medical insurance where your permission requires it (travel insurance is not enough)
- A credit or debit card for the €300 fee
- An email address you check, including the spam folder
Step by step
- Check your expiry date. ISD does not send reminders.
- Wait until you are within 12 weeks of expiry. Earlier applications are refused.
- Check the required documents for your stamp and scan them clearly.
- Log in or create an account on the renewals portal.
- Select the Registration Renewal form and start the application.
- Upload your documents, pay the fee if asked, and submit.
- Keep the acknowledgement email with your OREG application number.
- Upload anything else ISD asks for under the Additional Information Required tab within 14 days.
- Wait for the approval email, then for your new card by post.

Common mistakes
- Applying too early. More than 12 weeks before expiry and you are refused.
- Leaving it too late. If your permission expires before you apply, you are out of permission and cannot stay or work.
- Paying no fee when you should. A 'fee waived' application from someone who must pay is refused.
- Missing the 14-day reply. Your application closes and you start again. Email and post are not accepted.
- Blurry scans. An officer must be able to read every document.
If something goes wrong
- Card expired while you wait: if you applied before expiry, the Notice to Employers lets you keep working on your old conditions for up to 12 weeks. A wider interim notice ended on 31 August 2026.
- Permission expired before you applied: contact ISD at once through the Customer Service Portal.
- Travel: an in-date card lets you return without a visa. Visa-required nationals who leave before renewal is done need a 'D' entry visa to return.
- Lost or stolen card: report it to An Garda Síochána, then submit a query on the portal.
- Citizens Information Phone Service: 0818 07 4000.
