Upgrade your basic MyGovID to a verified account in minutes with a Public Services Card, or through the MyGovID app with an Irish passport.
MyGovID is the single login for Irish public services online. To verify it, log in at MyGovID.ie, select Verify Your Account and enter your Public Services Card details.
Do you need one?
A basic account needs only an email address. A verified account is more secure: each login sends a code to your phone, and it opens every MyGovID service.
- Basic is enough for: booking a PPS number appointment, your PRSI contribution record, Treatment Benefit checks, Working Family Payment and JobsIreland.ie.
- Verified is required for: applying online for the National Childcare Scheme, and getting or renewing a driving licence or learner permit online.
- Verified can also be used for: social welfare payments, Local Property Tax, PAYE, passports, student grants, voter registration and Housing Assistance Payment.
What you need
- A basic MyGovID account.
- Your PPS number (Personal Public Service number).
- A Public Services Card (PSC), the photo ID card from the Department of Social Protection.
- A mobile phone number verified by the Department of Social Protection.
- No PSC yet? You need a current Irish passport for the app, or ID and proof of address for a PSC Centre.
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| You have a PSC and a verified mobile | Verify online at MyGovID.ie |
| No PSC, but a current Irish passport, aged 16+, living in Ireland, never SAFE registered | Apply in the MyGovID app |
| No PSC and no Irish passport | Book SAFE registration at a PSC Centre |
| No PPS number | Apply for a PPS number first |
Step by step: open a basic account
- Go to MyGovID.ie and select create an account now.
- Enter your full name, email address and a password. Confirm you are over 16.
- Enter the 6-digit code sent to your email.
- Accept the privacy statement and terms.
Step by step: verify with your PSC
- Log in to MyGovID.ie with your basic account.
- Select Verify Your Account.
- Enter your PPS number, then your PSC number and expiry date.
- Enter the 6-digit code sent to the mobile linked to your PSC. Your account is now verified.
Step by step: no PSC yet
- Download the free MyGovID app from the Apple App Store or Google Play, if you have a current Irish passport.
- Apply in the app for a PSC and a verified MyGovID account.
- Wait for an officer to approve it. You then have a verified account, and your card comes by post.
- Without an Irish passport, contact your local PSC Centre to book SAFE registration (Standard Authentication Framework Environment). Some centres take walk-ins.
- Bring your ID, proof of address dated within 6 months and your mobile phone. It takes about 15 minutes.
How much it costs and how long it takes
Verifying with a PSC happens straight away once you enter the code. Official pages give no fee and no fixed time for app approval.
You need an in-date Public Services Card to set up a verified MyGovID.
An out-of-date PSC can still be used to set up a MyGovID account. But from 1 March 2026, free travel needs a valid, in-date Free Travel PSC.
Common mistakes
- Changing your mobile number and not telling the Department. The code goes to the old number.
- Trying the app with a foreign passport. It needs a current Irish passport.
- Bringing photocopies, a baptismal certificate or a work ID card to a PSC Centre. These are not accepted.
- Using proof of address older than 6 months.
