Renters can get up to €1,000 off their income tax this year, and more from 2027. Here is who qualifies and how to claim it online in Revenue's myAccount.
The Rent Tax Credit cuts your income tax by 20% of the rent you pay, up to €1,000 a year for one person or €2,000 for a jointly assessed couple. You claim it online in Revenue's myAccount, for this year or past years.
Who can claim
- You rent your home in Ireland and pay income tax.
- You rent a second home in Ireland for work or an approved course.
- You are a parent paying rent for a child on an approved course, if the child was under 23 at the start of the course year. Rent-a-room and digs count.
- Your tenancy is registered with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB). Rent-a-room and digs in the owner's home do not need to be registered.
You cannot claim if the home gets HAP (Housing Assistance Payment), Rent Supplement, the Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS) or is cost rental. The landlord cannot be a council, a housing body, your parent or your child. Rent-a-room and digs do not count if you are related to the owner.
What you need
- Your Revenue myAccount login
- The total rent you paid in the year. Deposits, repairs, bills, board and other services do not count.
- Your RTB Registered Tenancy (RT) number, if the tenancy is registered
- Your landlord's name and address, PPS (Personal Public Service) or tax reference number, and Local Property Tax number
- Records of your rental arrangement, in case Revenue asks
If your landlord prefers, they can send their details to Revenue through myEnquiries. You can still claim without the RT number, but Revenue may ask for it later and withdraw the credit if you cannot give it.

How much it costs and how long it takes
| Tax year | Single person | Jointly assessed couple |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 and 2023 | €500 | €1,000 |
| 2024 to 2026 | €1,000 | €2,000 |
| 2027 (Budget 2027) | €1,150 | €2,300 |
The credit cannot be more than the income tax you pay, and it does not reduce USC (Universal Social Charge) or PRSI.
Common mistakes
- Adding bills, the deposit or board to your rent total.
- Claiming when the home gets HAP, Rent Supplement or RAS.
- Forgetting past years. Each year from 2022 needs its own claim.
- Renting from a parent. That rent does not qualify.
- Skipping the RTB number. Revenue can withdraw the credit later if you cannot give it.
If something goes wrong
- Landlord will not share details? Ask them to send them to Revenue through myEnquiries.
- Tenancy not registered? Ask your landlord to register it with the RTB. Registered tenancies are needed to qualify, except rent-a-room and digs.
- Citizens Information Phone Service: 0818 07 4000, Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm.
