Apply on Passport Online for yourself or your child. A simple adult renewal takes about 10 working days and a first passport about 20.
You apply for an Irish passport on Passport Online, run by the Department of Foreign Affairs. An adult passport costs €75 and a child's costs €20, plus a €5 postal fee.
Who this is for
- Adult renewal: you are 18 or over and your last Irish passport was issued in the last 15 years.
- First-time adult: you never had an Irish passport, or your last one was issued more than 15 years ago.
- Child: anyone under 18. All of the child's guardians must give consent.
- Passport card: a card for travel in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. You need a valid passport book too.
What you need
- A digital photo that meets the photo rules. Take it at home (not a selfie), or get a code from a photo booth or pharmacy.
- A debit or credit card, an email address and a printer.
- Your current passport. Post it in if it has more than 12 months left (6 months for a child).
- First-time adults: a full civil birth certificate, two documents proving your name and address dated within 12 months, and a copy of your Public Services Card or original photo ID.
- Certificates must be originals. Laminated, certified or photocopied ones are not accepted.
Step by step: adult renewal
- Go to Passport Online and start an adult application.
- Upload your digital photo or enter your photo code.
- Enter your details and pay by debit or credit card.
- Post your old passport if it has more than 12 months left.
- Track your application with your 11-digit application number.
Step by step: first-time adult
- Fill in the form on Passport Online. It takes about 10 minutes.
- Print the identity verification form and the Application Cover Page.
- Bring the verification form to a member of An Garda Síochána in Ireland to sign. Abroad, use an approved witness.
- Post the original documents listed on your cover page by a secure method.
- Track your application. The 20 working days start when your documents arrive.
Step by step: child passport
- Apply on Passport Online with your child's photo and current passport.
- Print the Child Passport Identity and Consent Form at the end. You can open it only 5 times in 5 days.
- Bring your child to a witness who knows them, and sign in front of that witness. Each guardian signs.
- Send the form and any documents listed. Return the old passport if it has more than 6 months left.

What changed recently
Since 1 December 2025, the Passport Service no longer accepts the green APS1 and APS2 paper forms. For a paper application, call the Passport Assist Service on 01 613 1795. It posts you a pre-filled form to bring to your Post Office.
You no longer need a Garda to witness a child renewal in Ireland. Most airlines and ferries now ask for a valid passport or passport card between Ireland and Great Britain.
